Once Rishi Valmiki asked Narad Muni, "Give me an example of a person with an ideal chracter and free from any weakness in him."
Narad muni said,"You have put me a difficult question." After a while, he named Lord Rama as a model of perfection in every respect.
Rishi Walmiki said,"Relate me to the outstanding qualities of Lord Rama's character.
Narad smiled and said, "The very thought of Lord Rama sends in our hearts a thrill of joy. His first great virtue was his self-control. Second, he was very brave. Third, he was brilliant. Fourth, he was patient. Fifth, he has full control over his senses. Sixth, he was a genius. Seventh, he was a man of principles. Eighth, he was cautious in his speech. Ninth, and the most important, he was a very obedient son. Tenth, he was truthful. Eleventh, he was dedicated to the welfare of the people. Twelfth, he defended his reputation and good name. Thirteenth, he never failed in discharging his duty. Fourteenth, he was an expert in the use of arms. Fifteenth, he was dear to one and all. Sixteenth, he was not partial of anybody.
"For these great qualities, Lord Rama is worshiped everywhere.
Whosoever tries to cultivate these qualities will become lovable and adorable."
With a little effort we can also become virtuous. A noble and illustrious person loved and respected by the whole mankind.
We should set Lord Rama as a model before us. We should cultivate those qualities and practice them in our life.
One who is free from envy, who renders selfless service, uplifts his fellow-men, is polite in spite of his superior strength, is not proud in spite of his success, such a great soul can be a role model for us.
